Claudin is a fascinating person: an activist and leader of the Spanish Communist Party from the 1930s till the 1960s, he broke with the party when he began to question the subordination of the party to the needs of the Soviet diplomacy. This is where he is at his best, showing how the zig-zags of the Communist movement -- from the ultra-leftism of the third period to the reformism of the popular front -- were driven not by the need to defeat fascism and make a revolution,
but by the needs to support the USSR.

The translator; Brian Pearce taught English to Russian Embassy staff in the 1950s and was in Russia at the time of Lavrenti Beria's fall. He is one of Britain's most experienced translators of Communist history.

In very good condition with some mild wear - Spines are somewhat creased. Crisp and bright pages. Occasional pencil markings on text. Edges of cover are slightly bent. Outside edges when book closed shows a mild water stain but does not effect interior.
