Comprising Biographical Sketches of Early and Recent Explorers of the Great River, and a Full Account of the Discovery and Location of the true source in a lake beyond Itasca. "It is the purpose of this volume to present as far as possible, from all available sources, some idea of the circumstances which led to certain important discoveries in North America, together with such sketches of the old and recent explorers of the Mississippi as the plan of the work will permit" (author's preface) Glazier explored the headwaters of the Mississippi in 1881, and claims the discovery of the true source of the Mississippi lying immediately to the south of Lake Itasca, a small lake which he humbly named Lake Glazier. The photographic illustrations in this volume, by F. J. Trost, are purportedly the first such illustrations of the Mississippi headwaters. Frontis portrait of Willard Glazier. Very good condition with dark blue cloth boards with gold and silver illustration on cover (map of Lake Glazier and Lake Itasca), gold shield title box and Indian paddling canoe on spine, black lakes map illustration on rear board. Beveled board edges Bumped corners and slightly worn spine ends. Decorative endpapers. Very clean text. No cracking excepting on the bottom of the front cover inside, this front cover gives only very slightly, still tight and intact. A beautiful copy.
