Originally a physician, in 1887 he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels about Holmes and Dr. Watson. In addition, Doyle wrote over fifty short stories featuring the famous detective. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1893, by Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle had decided that these would be the last collection of Holmes's stories, and intended to kill him off in "The Final Problem". Reader demand stimulated him to write another Holmes adventure—The Hound of the Baskervilles. In "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", Holmes relates the aftermath of "The Final Problem", and how he survived. The first London edition of the Memoirs in 1894 did not include "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", although all twelve stories had appeared in the Strand Magazine. The first U.S. edition included the story, but it was very quickly replaced with a revised edition that omitted it. The reasoning behind the suppression may have been that this story included adultery and so was unsuitable for younger readers. This may have also been the cause for the rapid removal of the story from latter edition, and some sources state that the publishers believed the story was too scandalous for the American public. This addition includes the twelve adventures, the: "Silver Blaze"; "Cardboard Box"; "Yellow Face"; "Stockbroker's Clerk"; "Gloria Scott"; "Musgrave Ritual"; "Reigate Squire"; "Crooked Man"; "Resident Patient"; "Greek Interpreter"; "Naval Treaty"; "Final Problem". Very good condition with very soft bumped corners and spine ends. Interior very clean. An excellent read. Please see and enlarge photos and email with any questions prior to purchase. Thanks! |
