A collection of memories by one who played as a young man under John Philip Sousa in the United States Naval Training Station Band at Great Lakes, Illinois.
This distinguished bandmaster and composer led one of his three bands for a period of over half a century. He was appointed leader of the United States Marine Band in 1880. He formed his own professional touring concert band in 1892. For the following thirty-nine years, this legendary band not only crisscrossed America regularly but made four extended tours of Europe. In early 1917, Sousa suspended the operations of this civilian band and accepted a lieutenant's commission in the US Naval Reserve. He was immediately placed in charge of the young musicians and the music program at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. via Preface.
This book was purchased in the estate of a musical band composer. It is very well taken care of. Looks as new.
Excellent gift idea for the music or band buff in your life or for your own personal library.
