Pottle Sr. founded the music department in 1934 when the university was known as Southeastern Louisiana College. Ralph Pottle was a central figure in the move to establish music education in Louisiana during the mid-1930's. Tuning the School Band and Orchestra, the basic text in the field, has had wide influence on other author's treatises on rehearsal and performance techniques. About the contributor: Mark H. Hindsley: A graduate of Indiana University "with high distinction" in 1925, Mark Hindsley served as band director and music instructor at Indiana until 1929. His recordings of the University of Illinois Concert Band and his transcriptions of historical masterpieces are highly acclaimed at home and abroad. He is the author of seven books and more than 40 magazine articles on instrumental music. Recipient of the Sudler Medal of the Order of Merit from the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
