Publisher: G O S 1991 Signed by the author; First Edition ISBN-10 : 0942258010 ISBN-13 : 978-0942258011 271 pages -- Approx. size: 8.5" by 11.5" The Lafayette Escadrille was a squadron of American volunteer pilots who flew for France during World War I. On 28 April 1916 seven Americans in French military uniforms, pilots in France's Service Aeronautique, gathered with two French officers in an artist's villa at Luxeuil, France. These men were to become the nucleus of the Lafayette Escadrille, the most famous chasse, or pursuit squadron of WW 1. Of the seven pilots, five were the scions of millionaires, sons of powerful and wealthy American families, "the American Aristocracy," as one pilot referred to them. One was the son of a Baptist Minister, and the other a son of a farmer. All seven had served France in various capacities prior to coming to three in the trenches with the Foreign Legion, two in other French Aviation squadrons, and one in the American Ambulance. Beautiful like new condition but for a slight and soft bump lower front cover edge. Please see photos, enlarge and email with any questions. Thanks for looking. |
