Publisher: Saalfield Publishing Company, New York, 1931 Illustrated by Alfred Staten Conyers 308 pages -- approx. 7.5" by 5.5" Herman Melville (1819 - 1891). By the mid-1850s his popularity declined sharply, and by the time he died he had been largely forgotten. Yet in time his novel Moby Dick came to be regarded as one of the finest works of American, and indeed world, literature, as was Billy Budd, which was not published until long after his death, in 1924. Early printing with its scarce original dust jacket. Book is in very good condition with slightly bumped corners. Spotless but toned interior. The only writing is ink previous owners name inside endpaper at top. A naughty bookworm got to the upper and lower portion of page ends (pages 183 to 220 for top side edge and 223 to 263 at bottom edge). Both small and not in print or near it. DJ shows wear and tear at edges with heavy creasing and some tears at edges as well. Still a wonderful scarce item to have with the book.. Good clean pages with bright copy and firm binding. Light toning due to age. Very slightly bumped corners and spine ends. Interior is toned from age but spotless. Please see photos, enlarge and email with any questions. Thanks for looking. |
