The Fair God; or, The Last of the 'Tzins: A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico is a sweeping historical fiction by American author Lew Wallace (1827–1905). It is set against the backdrop of the Aztec Empire’s decline and the arrival of Hernán Cortés, weaving together romance, betrayal, and the clash of civilizations. The previous owner pasted a news clipping of the death of Lew Wallace, and penciled the date, Feb 15 1905. This darkened the title page which is tattered lower inside edge.
Lewis Wallace (1827 - 1905) was an American lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory, politician, diplomat and author from Indiana. Among his novels and biographies, Wallace is best known for his historical adventure story, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880)
Dark green cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, gilt center decoration to the front cover, and dark brown coated endpapers chipping at spine crown/heel. Toned pages due to age. Still a very good reading copy.
