The Deemster is a novel by Hall Caine published in 1887, considered to be the first 'Manx novel'. It was Caine's third novel, the second to be set in the Isle of Man and it was his first great success.
The plot revolves around the reckless actions of Dan Mylrea and the exile and atonement that follow.

‘The Deemster’ is a sensational novel, setting forth the righteousness of just retribution. The author calls it the story of the Prodigal Son.
The scene is laid in the Isle of Man, in the latter part of the seventeenth century and the early part of the eighteenth.

Very good condition with slightly bumped corners and spine ends. Beautiful edition with maroon boards and gilt decoration. Flash takes away some of the attractiveness.
Gift inscriptions 1901 in pencil. Interior very clean and tight.
