 The Dakota Hardware Company, originally known as the North Dakota Harness Company, was established in Casselton, North Dakota, in 1884 by Walter W. Smith and Charles O. Smith. The company later moved to Fargo in 1897 and expanded its business to South Dakota and Montana. In 1905, it built a new building at 627-629 N.P. Avenue, designed by the Hancock Brothers. The company's focus shifted to hardware in the 1930s, and in 1941, Thomas O. Smith took over as president. The company changed its name to Dakota Hardware Company in 194.
