Published by Boston: Little, Brown, 1956 First American Edition - Stated Approx. size: 7.75" - 5" -- 73 pages In the fall of 1954, famed author and Oscar-winning screenwriter James Hilton ("Lost Horizon" "Goodbye, Mr. Chips") ("Mrs. Miniver") was asked by the Hearst Syndicate to provide a Sunday newspaper piece on "England's uncrowned king" Prince Philip who was then only little known to the British public despite being the husband of newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II. The Story of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was published in book form by Little, Brown (Boston, 1956) and shortly thereafter by Frederick Muller Ltd. (London, 1956). Tells a special sort of success story complete with the outstanding elements of a continent shattered by force. For the small boy who left Greece, his birthplace, as an exile, spent his early childhood in Paris, his later boyhood under the adoptive and affectionate glance of his uncle Louis Mountbatten, studied in a German school that moved to Scotland with the Nazi crush, and bore Danish blood in his veins. His school-master Hahn felt he needed a great service to reveal and develop fully the talent for leadership Philip early indicated -- his Navy career fulfilled the commission. This career was changed by the equally demanding, one as Elizabeth's husband. James Hilton's appraising glance falls gently on the Duke of Edinburgh Illustrated with charming old photographs. Bright colorful cover kept safe years ago by a plastic covering. Note the old tape marks when it was applied. There are some old stampings of the previous owner, Mount St. Benedict Academy in Crookston Minnesota. Interior clean and unmarked. Wonderful addition to any library. Please see and enlarge photos and email with any questions prior to purchase. Thanks |
