This book is a comprehensive biography of Russell W. Porter. His life is almost too complex to explain, but the book does a good job of explaining how an ex-Arctic explorer and amateur telescope maker wound up playing a critical role in building the world's largest telescope. 200-in. Russell Williams Porter, an American artist, telescope maker, designer, and Arctic explorer, died Feb. 22, 1949, at the age of 77. Porter studied engineering and design in college in Vermont, and would study architecture at MIT, but before that, he suddenly developed an interest in Arctic exploration, and he participated in at least five expeditions between 1892 and 1904, including two led by Frederick Cook and two financed by Willian Ziegler. Porter functioned mainly as expedition artist, and many of his watercolors survive.

Very good condition with slightly bumped corners. Odd that with the dust jacket in extremely nice as is the inner pages....the book shows some dampening damage to the cloth spine area. (see photos). It does not hurt any of the a fore mentioned areas.
