Along Old Trails, Poems of New Mexico and Arizona by William Haskell Simpson 1929

Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1929 First Edition

A very nice copy of this uncommon cowboy poetry. This is a collection of poetry that celebrates the life in the Southwest, the ways of the Pueblo Indians, and the Grand Canyone.

Curious that the index page is factory un-cut. See photo 7.

Very Good / No Jacket.  First Edition. Hardcover Book with cactus on the covers. Paper label on spine.  Interior very nice and book tight and intact. Looking down the page ends appear slightly soiled. This book has rough factory edge pages so hard to tell. There is a slight soiling on the upper and lower cover ~ see photos.

This personally selected collection of essays, poems, stories, and quotations were inspirational to the father of positive thinking, Norman Vincent Peale, in his lifetime. He truly believed we can change our lives by changing our mental attitudes. The words and thoughts of great writers and thinkers can help us to develop a mindset that looks for the best in everything. Dr. Peale hoped that sharing these words from the Bible, Cicero, Shakespeare, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Dale Carnegie, and so many more would in, ire and help others to achieve the power to succeed.

Voices From Nature. A Volume Of Original Poems 1894 by Luranah Hammond

Very scarce book being original hard cover. Only can find reprints for sale.

Unkind writing in pencil on portrait page "Her poetry full of "I's", Cannot leave herself out". With an introduction by I Rev. A. L. Morse, MS.

Believed to be the only book Mrs. Hammond ever wrote. See below for some of her family genealogy as found on the internet:

Author: Hammond, Luranah, 1840 - 1913 Strongs Prairie Adams County, Wisconsin
with an introduction by I Rev. A. L. Morse, MS

Luranah Hammond was the youngest child of Nathan Hammond and Hannah Pierce. She was named for Luranah Warren, daughter of Russel and Lois Pierce Warren, who brought up Hannah Pierce. As a child, while in Rock Co., WI, Lurannah was not well enough to attend school and was taught at home by her mother. Even in her sixties she was unable to eat at the table with others. She would have crackers and lemons in her room. She had a sweet disposition and her voice was soft. She wrote poetry, sending them to different publishers and then some of them published in a book form entitled, "Voices from Nature." She was artistic in other ways, too. She made intricate bracelets and watch chains from hair, crocheting and other fancy work. She also raised canaries to sell.
In some of her poetry, she mentioned the large water wheel and her enjoyment as she watched the stream flow and the wheel turn. These must have been memories from the time they lived in Rock County, WI and her father had a grist mill.
Luranah, after the death of her husband, and with the children who were still living at home, lived for a time on a second farm near the Wisconsin River, purchased after his death. Here for a few years, they went into the strawberry raising business in a big way. They then sold the farm and moved into the city of Wausaw where Luranah died in 1913.

A Treasury of the Familiar Hardcover – 1942 by Ralph L Woods

Hardcover: 751 pages
Publisher: PBC Peoples Book Club (1942)

An outstanding compendium of literature! A book to take along on trips. Particular favorites are Poe's "The Raven", Robert W. Service's three poems, "Casey At The Bat", "The Face On The Floor", "When Father Carves A Duck", and the story of the Creation. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is another favorite.

Everyone will have their own list of works they think they'll never find again. The book is full and truly a remarkable collection. It belongs on every bookshelf, if only because you'll never find another
source for so many of the poems within it.

Beige cloth with dark green on spine. Slightly bumped corners covers and some very minor soiling on covers. Extremely clean and tight interior.

Li'l Gal by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Publisher: Dodd Mead & Co; First Edition edition (1904)

Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in 1872 in Dayton, where he was a classmate of Orville Wright. He wrote for Dayton community newspapers, published an African-American newsletter, and worked as an elevator operator while writing poetry. His work gained notice among literary figures including Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley and Ohio-born novelist and Atlantic Monthly editor William Dean Howells. Dunbar eventually achieved international fame. Although he is best known for his poetry, he also wrote short stories, novels, plays, and songs. He died in Dayton in 1906.

This edition of Li’l’ Gal was published by Dodd, Mead and Co. in 1904. The cover and highly decorated interior pages were created by Margaret Armstrong; you can see her initials at the base of the bouquet. Armstrong was one of several prominent women designers working in publishing during the late 1800s and early 1900s. She specialized in nature-inspired themes and worked on several of Dunbar’s books. Excellent with little wear. Tear to surface frontis, see photo. Otherwise very nice. Uneven original pages.

Farm Ballads by Will Carleton ~ Poetry, Illustrated....Country Farm Family's and Life Harper Bros; New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1873 / 1882

Green cloth blocked in gold and black on front and spine, black on back.

A classic and charming book first published in 1873, this is a collection of poems written on the farm about families, love, death, money, nature and the out-of-doors with equally charming illustrations. The book was the number one bestseller in its publication year.

Very good, no jacket. Minor spine and corner bumps. Page 83 has jagged irrational cut and page although there is separated. Strange. Otherwise looks to be hardly read.
