Published by New York: Alfred A. Knopf
“ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICS OF THE WAR”: JOHN HERSEY’S HIROSHIMA, FIRST EDITION
118 pages. Rough cut pages. No Jacket

“The quietest and the best of all the stories that have been written about the most spectacular explosion in the time of man” (New York Times Book Review).
“Hersey’s best-known book, Hiroshima, [was] hailed by one reviewer as ‘one of the great classics of the war’ (New Republic, 9 Sept. 1946).

As found via internet;

Hersey completed this work after a trip to Japan in 1945-1946; the trip was cosponsored by Life magazine, for which he had worked as an editor and a correspondent in 1944-1945, and by the New Yorker. An account of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the work was first printed as an issue of the New Yorker (31 Aug. 1946) and later read in its entirety on ABC radio” (ANB). “Hersey drew from the victims themselves the understanding of history that had eluded him as a war correspondent. The six Hiroshima residents told him how they had lived before the bomb struck, why they were not killed, and precisely how illness, exhaustion, and personal sorrow had qualified their survival” (Contemporary Novelists).

Mild toning to boards with some slight bumped corners. Spine shows slightly broken ends. Previous owners stamp on front endpaper. No writings to the very clean and crisp interior.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE IN THE CONCENTRATION CAMP AT DACHAU? by Dr. Johannes Neuhäusler

Trustees for the Monument of Atonement in the Concentration Camp at Dachau Publ. A. G. Manz.  5th Edition

This book explains in the words of people who ran the camp and who were interned in Konzentrationslager Dachau, what that experience was like. It also translates the German inscription on the roof of the administration building at Dachau into plain English. That inscription greeted every prisoner who spent time at Dachau. It shows the Jourhaus, the administration offices, the bunker, roll call square, the Kantine for the prisoners, the camp office, the camp library, the infirmary, the barrack of the convict company, the crematorium, watch towers, gas chamber, and more.

Other portions deal with the camp leader, report leader, block leader, interrogation officer, labor exchange, Jews, clergymen, executions, plantation work, the munitions factories, etc.,

Very good condition with slightly bumped corners. Bottom part of spine torn. Only one marking, circling of the date March 22, 1933. Interior otherwise very clean and tight.

SCHLEY'S STORY OF SANTIAGO - THE LIFE OF ADMIRAL WINFIELD SCOTT SCHLEY ~ Antique soft cover book

There is no doubt that Schley's turn gave the Spanish ships added time to get out of the mouth of Santiago harbor, but the American fleet, including Schley's Brooklyn, which had completed its turn and was still ahead of the Oregon, closed and at only about 1,000 yards engaged the Vizcaya in a running fight. It was fortunate for Schley that the Vizcaya, ordinarily a fast ship, was very slow due to having an extremely fouled hull and could not match the speed of the Colon which was now clear of the fight. Had the hull of the Vizcaya been clean, Schley would have found himself chasing two ships and not fighting one. The Teresa was now on fire and was so damaged that it had to turn north and beach itself.

The battle between the Brooklyn and the Vizcaya was ferocious for a time as the ships steamed west, but the quality weaponry of the Brooklyn overwhelmed it, not to mention the Oregon which was astern and firing. The Vizcaya, terribly damaged after a torpedo exploded internally and on fire, was forced to also beach itself. By this time the Oquendo and the Spanish destroyers had also been overwhelmed by American fire.

Author     James Bradley

This book details a World War II incident of the execution and cannibalism of five of eight American P.O.W.s
on the Pacific island of Chichi-jima, one of the Ogasawara Islands (Bonin Islands)

The book also documents Japanese cannibalization of not only the livers of freshly killed prisoners, but also the cannibalization-for-sustenance of living prisoners over the course of several days, amputating limbs only as needed to keep the meat fresh in the harsh jungle environment. It also cites cannibalism of Allied soldiers killed in action and of Japanese dead, wounded and by lot drawings.

These atrocities on Chichi-jima, were discovered in late 1945 and was investigated as part of the war crimes trials. In 1946, 30 Japanese soldiers were court-martialed on Guam and four officers (Maj. Matoba, Gen. Tachibana, Adm. Mori and Capt. Yoshii) were found guilty and hanged. All of the enlisted men were released within eight years.

Asbjørn Sunde: Menn i mørket, 1947 1ST Edition (Men in the Darkness; autobiography) (Norwegian)

Men in the dark is an autobiographical book by Asbjørn Sunde, first published in 1947. Sunde was one of the most prominent resistance fighters during the Second World War, when he also became known by the alias "Osvald." In the book he tells about activities of sabotage organization he led, subsequently known as the Osvald Group. Sunde's organization was long communist and NKP spearhead in the fight against the Nazis. After the release he gave personally a copy of his saboteur colleague Gunnar Sønsteby.

In content the book is documentary, and tells of actual events that took place during the resistance struggle. In form it is an almost fictional, and can be read as a "tension classic from war", "a thriller from reality."

Asbjørn Edvin Sunde (12 December 1909 – 23 April 1985) was a Norwegian sailor, communist, and a saboteur against the Nazi occupation of Norway during the Second World War. During the war, from 1941 to 1944, Sunde's group - the Osvald Group - carried out approximately 39 acts of sabotage and assassination against the German occupation forces and collaborators. In 1954 he was convicted for treason and espionage in favour of the Soviet Union.

Sunde played a central role in the internal conflicts of the Communist Party of Norway in the late 1940s. The struggle culminated with the expulsion of former chairman Peder Furubotn and a number of other so-called "Titoists" in 1949/1950.

Back Home, Mauldin, Bill Published by William Sloane Associates, New York, NY (1947)

Great book describing how a soldier, Mauldin, adjusts to the post-war peace time theater of the American democracy.
Wonderfully written with corresponding cartoons to emphasize his point, Mauldin tells a true and opinionated tale of life in the United States.
Bill Mauldin served in combat in World War II and became a chronicler of the military life of the infantrymen and the lower ranks.
This book is a critical look at postwar America.
