THE CRISIS By Winston Churchill 1904 Edition

The Macmillan Company, 1901 / 1904. Hardcover.

From the Afterword: "The author has chosen St. Louis for the principal scene of this story for many reasons. Grant and Sherman were living there before the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln was an unknown lawyer in the neighboring state of Illinois. It has been one of the aims of this book to show the remarkable contrasts in the lives of these great men who came out of the West."

"The Little World of Don Camillo tells a delightful story of a parish priest and his trials and tribulations in dealing with his wayward flock. The scene is the village where Don Camillo has been a priest for many years. The people love and respect him, and like all of them he has his problems. First of all his beloved Gertrude is missing. The whole village shares Don Camillo's sadness, for Gertrude was a war casualty. She was melted down for metal and now Don Camillo has to find enough money for a new bell. But this is a minor problem compared to what is in store for the priest when Peppone is elected Mayor. The way Don Camillo and Peppone reach an agreement is very amusing and they no sooner solve one problem than they are faced with another." (from the dust jacket)
Each chapter is headed with a small cartoon-like illustration.

Houghton, Mifflin & Co. 1896

HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES. Riverside Literature Series, No. 91.

The House of the Seven Gables is a Gothic novel written beginning in mid-1850 by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in April 1851 by Ticknor and Fields of Boston. The novel follows a New England family and their ancestral home. In the book, Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement and colors the tale with suggestions of the supernatural and witchcraft. The setting for the book was inspired by a gabled house in Salem belonging to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll and by ancestors of Hawthorne who had played a part in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. 378 pages

Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven; 1909 Harper and Brothers

First published in Harper's Magazine in December 1907 and January 1908.
Released in 1909 by Harper's as a Christmas gift book. Extracts was the last book Mark Twain published during his lifetime. Outstanding book and one of  Mark Twain's more unusual works..Combining science fiction with a satiric look at conventional views of the afterlife.

Captain Stormfield was inspired by Captain Edgar Wakeman, a sea captain whom Clemens met in 1866; Wakeman's eccentric character and personality made a tremendous impact on the young man, and he is the model for several Twain characters besides Stormfield; Wakeman's retelling of a dream he had in which he visited heaven was the source for the story.

Fiction, Fantasy, Afterlife, Sci Fi

Beautiful bright copy in red boards with blue and white pictorial cover of the Captain on his way.  Frontispiece behind tissue guard. Note copyright page. First Edition / First Printing. No code letters on copyright page. 120 pages

Little Lord Fauntleroy, Frances Hodgson Burnett
Publisher:     Charles Scribner's Sons New York
Date:     1886

Measures 7 1/4" x 8 1/2" Early and quite rare edition of this wonderful story. Illustrated by Reginald Birch.

Long ago, a young English nobleman married a beautiful American girl, causing a rift between the man and his father. Because of this rift, eight years later, in New York we come across the offspring of this union, young Cedric Errol. Ceddie is a beautiful boy both inside and out.

You will be captivated by young Ceddie and his friends Mr. Hobbs, Dick and Bridget and their adventures. The book also stresses the importance of values such as love, loyalty, and kindness.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is the first children's novel written by English–American playwright and author Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was originally published as a serial in the St. Nicholas Magazine between November 1885 and October 1886, then as a book by Scribner's in 1886. Not positive but I do believe this to be a first and original rare edition. Does not show the press imprint.

209 pages + 14 pages of publisher's advertisements at end.

Pictorial brown cloth cover with gilt lettering on spine.  Red and black lettering on front with gilt stamp of Fauntleroy and dog. Brown endpapers.  Illustrated frontispiece with tissue guard. Newspaper clipping titled 'Little Lord Fauntleroy Dies - at 61' preserved on front end paper.  Plastic covering. Very Good. Some edge wear showing. Beautiful tight and clean copy. A beautiful copy of this rare title. More photos available upon request.

The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club; Author: Charles Dickens
Thomas Nelson & Sons NY
Not dated ~ assumed 1890's

Dickens’ first novel - series of comic travelers' tales following Samuel Pickwick and his three friends to various towns around England.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, better known as The Pickwick Papers, is the first novel by Charles Dickens. The illustrator Robert Seymour claimed that the idea for the novel was originally his; however, in his preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens strenuously denied any specific input, writing that "Mr Seymour never originated or suggested an incident, a phrase, or a word, to be found in the book."

At any event, Dickens was asked to contribute to the project as an up and coming writer following the success of Sketches by Boz, published in 1836. Dickens, supremely confident as ever, increasingly took over the unsuccessful monthly publication after Seymour had committed suicide.

No Jacket. Excellent. Lovely leather binding and very rare. Volume I. Satin ribbon bookmark. 845 pgs. Green marbled end-papers. Gold gilt page edges.

This is a very large and heavy 1880 Knight's Pictorial Edition of the works of William Shakespeare edited by Charles Knight.
It contains the Tragedies, two volumes in one.

The Tragedies that are included are:
Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Cymbeline, Othello, Timon of Athens, and King Lear.

There are very beautiful picture plates for each tragedy. Tissue paper protects the plates. The cover is embossed. There is a tear in the spine and separation on the inside of the spine. See photos.
Cover shows wear, again see photos. Very good though for the age.
