Time Special Edition. Franklin D. Roosevelt; The Power of Leadership 2018 - Brand New

Single Issue Magazine
Publisher: Time, Topix (2018)
ASIN: B07K5FZ3BR

Time Magazine 2018 Franklin D Roosevelt The Power of Leadership. Wonderful book in a chaotic time for politics and America.

Writing to his fellow Democrats in the 1920s, Roosevelt noted that their party could not hope to return to power until the Republicans led the nation "into a serious period of depression and unemployment." The Great Depression soon brought a far longer and deeper period of woe than F.D.R. foresaw. But the crisis of the 1930s also provided an object lesson in the relationship between economic danger and political opportunity.....

A More Secure America
It's old news that F.D.R.'s New Deal did not end the Depression. On that score, there was little difference between Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover. But unlike Hoover, F.D.R. seized the occasion to shape a legacy of durable reforms. For that accomplishment — along with winning World War II — historians routinely rank him among the greatest Presidents.

Subject: Irish in Minnesota

The Irish have played extraordinary roles in Minnesota. St. Paul's Irish image dates from per-territorial days (and derives from scoundrels and prizefighters along with politicians and churchmenn.)

Except for the immigrant Irish and their progeny, Minnesota history would have been quite different. Taken from front un-clipped flap.

Green Dj with photo of musicians on front. Blue boards decorated with shamrocks both outside and on endpapers. Very attractive book.

Near mint both book and jacket. Dustjacket with very minor edge bumps to corners. Book is as new. Tight, crisp and sound, unmarked copy. Price is present on back cover.

Rome Roberts's colorful diary of the 49th Minnesota Legislature that met in 1935

In 1935, Rome Roberts published a 210 page diary of the 49th Minnesota Legislature titled The Minnesota Merry-Go-Round. The title was derived from “The Washington Merry-Go-Round,” a popular column by Washington journalist Drew Pearson that was published in newspapers around the country from 1932 to 1969. Roberts’s book was profusely illustrated with drawings and portraits of legislators that made it an easy if not compulsive read.

Illustrations by the International Photo-Engravers Union of North America - I.P.E.U. Wonderful typical of the era cartoons and illustrations.

Scarce copy of a very interesting book. Cloth decorated covers.  Please email with any questions prior to purchase. Great gift idea for the political junky.

Publisher: Simon & Schuster  / Literary Research, Inc. 1994

What makes a leader? How do we identify effective leadership, and how should—and shouldn’t—that power be used? In Certain Trumpets, Garry Wills presents portraits of eminent leaders including FDR to Ross Perot, King David, Martha Graham, and many others, offering an illuminating lens for studying society and ourselves.

Dividing these portraits into sixteen leadership categories ranging from military to charismatic, intellectual, rhetorical, and elected, Wills highlights what makes each of his subjects unique, crafting along the way a distinct and incisive definition of leadership as a reciprocal engagement between two contrasting wills that serves to mobilize us toward a common good, and explaining why leadership is so often a contentious and emotionally charged subject.

Very nice softcover that looks to be hardly read if ever. Very slight bump to lower right corner of cover.  Please email with any questions.

As the world still reeled from the tragic and historic events of November 22, 1963, William Manchester set out, at the request of the Kennedy family, to create a detailed, authoritative record of the days immediately preceding and following President John F. Kennedy's death.

Quote from book;
Dear John —   It will be many years before you understand fully what a great man your father was. His loss is a deep personal tragedy for all of us, but I wanted you particularly to know that I share your grief—You can always be proud of him — Affectionately Lyndon B. Johnson

The Author:

William Manchester (1922-2004) was a hugely successful popular historian and biographer whose books include The Last Lion, a three-volume biography of Winston Churchill; Goodbye, Darkness; A World Lit Only by Fire; The Glory and the Dream; The Arms of Krupp; and American Caesar. He received the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award

During the course of American history, wrongful events have occurred and certain Americans have stood up and spoken out against these wrongs: Tom Paine, Edward R. Murrow, Daniel Ellsberg. Vincent Bugliosi takes his place in this special pantheon of patriots with his powerful, brilliant, and courageous expose of crime by the highest court in the land. When an article he wrote on this topic appeared in The Nation magazine in February 2001, it drew the largest outpouring of letters and e-mail in the magazine's 136-year history, tapping a deep reservoir of outrage. The original article is now expanded, amended, and backed by amplifications, endnotes, and the relevant Supreme Court documents.

Very nice like new condition. Looks as if never read. Interior spotless.

Subjects: American bison

Between 1800 to 1890 the free roaming buffalo in North America were reduced from an estimated 60 million to fewer than 20 wild bison in the U.S. " Now there are over 17,000 bison living under varying degrees of supervision ranging from private herds to restrictive zoos to large parks where the animals can again roam freely. This book is an attempt to present a survey of the decimation of the bison; to consider the major factors that have influenced the growth of the buffalo population since 1990." From the book's preface.

"This book provides specific details regarding the destruction of the American Buffalo in the USA. The writer provides numbers to support his report. The information this book presents is disturbing but we need to know it!" via online review.

Wonderful hardcover book, like new...looks un-read with like dust jacket. Illustrated endpapers with two original bookmark and file card from bookstore from original purchaser in Winnipeg. Excellent illustrations throughout book. Please email with any questions.

Creativity, Conflict & Controversy 1979: A History of the St. Paul District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by Raymond Merritt

Publisher: US Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul MN - 1979
First Edition (With original letterhead of issue)
Army Corps of Engineers from 1866-1975
Size: 10.75 inches tall by 8 1/2 inches wide

"The history of the St. Paul District is the history of the upper Midwest and its growth over more than century," according to Col. (Ret.) Forrest T. Gay, III, the district's 49th district engineer.

Published in 1979, the book examines the history of the district, starting with the area's exploration by the French and ending with the Corps' work up to the mid-1970s. Merritt details the major projects undertaken by the district, including dam construction on the waterways in the Upper Mississippi Valley.

But far from just a list of projects, the book examines the various conflicts and controversies surrounding the Corps, such as environmental issues. As Merritt wrote in the preface, "The current popular image of the Corps - good, bad or indifferent - is largely myth." By making this book available to the public through the internet, we hope to be able to inform the public of all the Corps has done for the Upper Mississippi Valley and the Corps' role in their lives.

Original letterhead for the sale of the book. Edge of this letter shows wear as it was at one point probably sat inside book lengthwise.

Beautiful condition with only the slightest handling wear. Pages are clean with no markings from previous owners, except for the original sales slip inside showing original cost.  Binding is square and tight. Boards are clean.

"The author was an impressive woman, born the daughter of Thorleifur Joakimson (Americanized to Jackson) and Gudrún Jónsdóttir in Pembina County, North Dakota. They were of the Icelandic stock who had come first to Manitoba and thence to Dakota Territory.
Manifesting the Icelandic penchants for educational attainments and literary pursuits, Thorstina Jackson taught school, became a social worker, and took graduate work at Columbia University. There, and thereafter, she pursued studies in Icelandic history, culture, and emigration. King Christian X of Denmark and Iceland awarded her the Knights Cross and Order of the Falcon. She was an active organizer of the Icelandic Millennial Celebration in 1930." Remarks found online.

Margaret Truman, author of well-received murder mysteries and of the biography Harry S. Truman, here pays tribute to her mother. Drawing on personal recall as well as on some 1500 letters mostly written by Bess but also several hundred of Harry's Margaret Truman recreates her parents' lives: the difficult passages when Harry and later Bess were swamped by political pressures, as well as the homespun pleasures of their long marriage. Seldom have the terms of marriage at its most enduring been so touchingly revealed as in these pages, which include dozens of rare photos.

This concise book makes very interesting historical reading. Hardcover with dust jacket which is covered by plastic to protect.

Good condition but ex-library with the usual markings. Photos show the worst. Overall very clean interior with no writings. Please email with any questions.

"This attractive book brings the history of the Liberty Bell alive for young readers. The original bell, imported from England in 1752, made a dull sound and immediately cracked. Recast twice at an American foundry, the bell rang to announce one important event after another: the end of the French and Indian War; the Boston Tea Party; the battle at Lexington; the signing of the Declaration of Independence; the end of the Revolutionary War; and the death of George Washington, among others. Even after the bell cracked in 1843, it served as an important national symbol, traveling across the U.S. in the late 1800s to help reunify the country. In different periods, abolitionists, suffragists, and civil rights leaders adopted the Liberty Bell as their symbol. Students tend to learn and subsequently categorize historical periods as separate "units," but here Magaziner wisely creates an overall sense of unity through history. Written with clarity and verve, this uses the central image of the bell to tie together the events it heralded and the causes it came to represent. O'Brien's imaginative and sometimes witty ink drawings illustrate with finesse".

This concise book makes very interesting historical reading for youth or adult alike. Black and white illustrations.

Looks to be never read. Very good to excellent. Tight and wonderful book with very good dust cover.

The Strange Death of President Harding from the Diaries of Gaston B. Means - A department of Justice Investigator.  1930

Guild Publishing, New York; 1930
1st Edition, 8th Printing.

This book purports to tell of Gaston Means' activities as an investigator for the U. S. Department of Justice when Harry Daugherty was Attorney-General. This book purports to tell of Gaston Means' activities as an investigator for the U. S. Department of Justice when Harry Daugherty was Attorney-General. It is replete with lengthy quotations of people Means says he came in contact with while working for Mrs. Harding. These cannot be accurate unless Means had them taped--long before the days of Watergate. No doubt Nixon would have been enamored of Means, who did "dirty tricks" so successfully--according to him.

Would make for an interesting read considering today's politics. Covers show every blemish due to flash, doesn't appear to be this scuffed to the naked eye. A stamp of sorts is partially seen on spine. Hardcover, good condition, tight and intact. Rough edged original pages, last few longer than others. Someone took ink to three pages in the beginning including title page and I find one interior page. Not large scribbling but enough to be annoying. Toned pages due to age with some slight soiling.

The corporation has become the core institution of the modern world. Designed to seek profit and power, it has pursued both with endless tenacity, steadily bending the framework of law and even challenging the sovereign status of the state.

In Gangs of America he details the rise of corporate power in America through a series of fascinating stories, each organized around a different facet of the central question: “How did corporations get more rights than people?” Nace traces the events and people that have shaped the modern corporation to give us a fascinating look into the rise of corporate power.

Very good condition with original jacket. Book is like new outside of a title and reference in the index I see highlighted. If more I haven't found but overall in beautiful condition.

Cotton has touched off wars and revolutions, inspired astonishing inventions, laid waste to entire ecosystems, and enslaved untold millions of people. Today, cotton is, if anything, more preeminent than ever and at the center of raging global controversies.

By the mid-nineteenth century, the vast plantations of the antebellum South, the grim mill towns of New England, and the soot-spewing factories of the English Midlands were knit together in a global system of exploitation and enslavement—all of it based on cotton. When Marx and Engels composed The Communist Manifesto, they chose cotton manufacturing as the prime symbol of capitalism run amok. Beautifully researched and written, Big Cottontraces the cultural, economic, and social history of the “world’s friendliest” fiber from the kingdoms of Mesopotamia to the Gap.

Illustrated with wonderful artwork and photos. Excellent gift idea.

Phillips describes three central, unifying planks in the Republican coalition. The first is oil. The second is radical religion. The third is unprecedented levels of national and consumer debt.

An explosive examination of the coalition of forces that threatens the nation, from the bestselling author of American Dynasty

In his two most recent bestselling books, American Dynasty and Wealth and Democracy, Kevin Phillips established himself as a powerful critic of the political and economic forces that rule—and imperil—the United States, tracing the ever more alarming path of the emerging Republican majority’s rise to power. Now Phillips takes an uncompromising view of the current age of global overreach, fundamentalist religion, diminishing resources, and ballooning debt under the GOP majority. With an eye to the past and a searing vision of the future, Phillips confirms what too many Americans are still unwilling to admit about the depth of our misgovernment.

Very nice condition. Spotless interior, pages are clean and bright. Binding is tight. Looks barely read. Only very slight bumped corners.

Headwaters of the Mississippi by Captain Willard Glazier 1897 ~ Account of the Discovery and Location of its True Source in a Lake Beyond Itasca

Headwaters of the Mississippi : - Comprising Biographical Sketches of Early and Recent Explorers of the Great River, and a Full Account of the Discovery and Location of its True Source in a Lake Beyond Itasca.

This intriguing book was written by Civil War veteran and former prisoner-of-war Captain Willard Glazier, who, upon concluding his service for the Union cause, embarked on a career of adventure and exploration on the American frontier. In the years following the war, Captain Glazier completed a one-man journey on horseback from Boston to San Francisco. He also personally organized and commanded two pioneering expeditions in search of the true source of the Mississippi.

HEADWATERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI is a historical chronicle of Mississippi River exploration, from the early discoveries of De Vaca and Desoto, Marquette and Joliet, to Captain Glazier's own controversial expeditions in 1881 and 1891, in which he set out to pinpoint the true source of the Mississippi and dispute a popular claim that the river rises from Lake Itasca.

The Bunker Hill Monument Adams and Jefferson...Two Orations by Daniel Webster; Riverside Literature Series #56

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin & Company
Publication Date: 1893

"As early as 1776, steps were taken toward the commemoration of the battle of Bunker Hill and the heroic death of Dr. Joseph Warren, who was buried upon the hill the day after the action. At the time of the battle, Warren was a major-general in the Continental Army. The Massachusetts Lodge of Masons, over which Warren had presided, applied to the provisional government of Massachusetts for permission to take up his remains and to bury them with the usual solemnities. The Council granted this request, on condition that the government of the Colony might have an opportunity to erect a monument to his memory. A eulogy on General Warren was delivered, but no measures were taken toward building a monument. --On the 11th of November, 1794, a committee was appointed by King Solomon's Lodge, at Charlestown, /1/ to take measures for the erection of a monument to the memory of General Joseph Warren at the expense of the Lodge. "

Beautiful and very early edition for your original series. This being number 56. 15c. paperback at the year of publishing.

Normal toned pages due to age. A very light penciling is the only writing at the blank first page stating Hilda Halverson, "Touch Not, Taste Not, Handle Not" -- obviously this previous owner had a sense of humor. Slightly bumped corners, some discoloration by staples, still tight and nice edition.

Please see photos and email with any questions.
